Almost everyone in Maycomb is going to the courthouse to watch a trial. All I know about it is that Atticus is defending a black man. I do not yet know the charges. Scout, Jem, and Dill have made there way to the courthouse. It was so packed that Scout got separated from her brother and friend. She was walking to the stairwell where she knew Jem would find her, when she heard a group of men talking about her father and that he was defending a black man, ( though they didn't use as kind language ) and that he was out if his right mind to be defending a .... again. Not the nicest name. I wonder what's going on??? Why is this particular case so exciting? Is it because... OH!!! Tom Robinson, the man who was in the cell, is probably the man Atticus is defending!!! OHHH!!! Every things making sense now!!!
The downstairs seats were all full and there is no more standing space because They spent the precious time they coudve used getting standing space, looking for Scout. So Reverend Sykes, who is one of the few men not racist and I mean not racist at ALL, invited them to the top balcony, for black people. This must be some trial.
"When they spoke there voices sounded casually important. They were talking about my father." -Scout
WOW, you had a total EUREKA moment when you realized who Atticus is defending. Tell me, do you have schema on the setting of this novel? What time period is i? And where does it take place? Why is the place so important to how people in the book react to each other? In your mind, think about this book and your definition of the American Dream...
